The Department of Translation Studies celebrated its Annual Translation Day 2024 on 4th of October, 2024, at the Kailasapathy Auditorium, University of Jaffna as a part of Golden Jubilee Celebration of the University. The event showcased the dynamic and evolving field of translation through various exhibits, performances, and cultural activities.
The day began with the exhibition at 8.00 AM, officially opened by the Vice Chancellor, Professor S. Srisatkunarajah, who ceremonially cut the ribbon. The exhibition featured a variety of informative and engaging displays, including presentations on the differences between interpretation types, the various dimensions of translation, and the rise of media translations. A documentary highlighting the challenges faced by undergraduates in learning a second language was also a key feature. Other notable displays included a dramatic performance addressing the impact of misinterpretations, an insightful piece on political interpretations, and interactive language games designed to engage the audience with translation-related tasks. Additionally, students from South Eastern University visited the exhibition, further enhancing the sense of collaboration between institutions.
The formal program started at 1.30 PM, with the ceremonial lighting of the oil lamp by the Chief Guest, Professor S.Srisatkunarajah, alongside the Special Guest, Professor S.Raguram, Dean of the Faculty of Arts. The ceremony was further graced by the presence of the Head of the Department, Dr. S. K. Kannathas, who delivered an insightful and inspiring speech, visiting lecturers, and other esteemed members of the faculty.
One of the major highlights of the day was the launch of the department’s annual magazine, “Translator – Issue VII.” The Vice Chancellor, Professor S. Srisatkunarajah, had the honor of unveiling the new issue and delivered an inspiring speech, commending the hard work and dedication of the students.
The program came to a close at around 5:30 PM, leaving participants and attendees inspired by the achievements and creativity showcased during Translation Day 2024.The event was a testament to the Department of Translation Studies’ commitment to fostering a deep understanding of translation and its significance in today’s globalized world.
