B.A (Hons) Degree in Translation Studies

On completion of the Bachelor of Arts Degree Programme in Translation Studies, the graduates should be able to have a clear knowledge in Translation Studies with the ability for creative, critical and analytical and problem-solving proficiencies and skills, be able to engage in activities to be an efficient professional translator/interpreter and well equipped with the techniques and strategies to overcome the challenges in the profession of translation/interpretation and be able to examine and understand the full breadth of issues concerning social, cultural, environmental, regulatory and ethical aspects associated in the field of Translation.

Specific Attributes

A Bachelor of Arts in Translation Studies graduate of the University of Jaffna shall exhibit the attributes with respect to academic excellence, employability, social engagement and global citizenship and lifelong learning.

Academic excellence:

  • Having thorough knowledge in the subject areas of translation studies and possesses the skills of Translation and Interpretation.
  • Able to recognize similarities and dissimilarities at all linguistic levels among Tamil, English and Sinhala (source language and target language) Languages.
  • Analyze the nature of inter-lingual translation from language A, B and language C and perceive international norms regarding inter- lingual
  • Study the differences between text types and practice how to translate general and specific texts efficiently and effectively using different techniques and
  • Having intellectual skills with the ability for creative, critical and analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Articulate their knowledge in critical perspective to translate different texts from fields and demonstrate how this knowledge is applicable in practical
