Producing qualified Translators and Interpreters with theoretical framework of Translation and promote translation as professional task by Learning, improving, practicing language abilities in Tamil, Sinhala and English through new technologies to the discipline throughout the Island.
INTRODUCTION TO THE DEPARTMENT
Department of Translation Studies has been offering special degree in Translation Studies since 2011 in the Faculty of Arts, University of Jaffna. Since Translation enables effective communication between people around the world, it is a medium for the dissemination of knowledge, a protector of cultural heritage, and essential to the development of a global economy. It is obvious that there is a dearth for translators in Sri Lanka. Translation Studies of University of Jaffna helps Undergraduates develop skills needed to become professional translators in English-Tamil-Sinhala Languages. Therefore, the undergraduates, following special degree in this department, have definite opportunities to be employed as translators.
It was upgraded as Department of Translation Studies on 19-02-2020 by the ‘The Gazette of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, No. 2163/21 ’.
