Workshop on Sworn Translation and Practice – 2025
The Department of Translation Studies organized a one-day workshop on Sworn Translation and Practice on October 24, 2025. The workshop was led by three resource persons from the Department of Official Languages: Mr. T. Santhirasegaram, Mr. Norman Pinto, and Mr. A.G.R.P. Kumara. The workshop started at 930 a.m. in the Seminar Hall, Faculty of Arts, University of Jaffna. It aimed to enhance students’ practical understanding of sworn translation, including its procedural and ethical aspects. The sessions mainly focused on translation practice across three language pairs English to Tamil, Tamil to English, and Tamil to Sinhala. The resource persons offered valuable insights into the legal framework, official document and linguistic accuracy required in sworn translation. Participants engaged in hands-on translation activities involving real-life legal and administrative documents, which helped improve their translation skills and awareness of cross-linguistic and cultural nuances.
The afternoon session featured an interactive discussion in which students shared their experiences and clarified any doubts they had about the responsibilities of sworn translators. The workshop concluded at 4.00 p.m. with a token of appreciation presented to the resource persons by Dr. S. Mathura, acknowledging the efforts of the organizers, speakers, and participants for their active involvement. Overall, the workshop provided meaningful exposure to the practical, ethical, and procedural aspects of sworn translation and significantly contributed to the students’ professional development.
